Mr Cenz
Mr Cenz has been scribbling on surfaces since he first discovered hip-hop culture and graffiti via a copy of Subway Art, Henry Chalfant and Martha Cooper's definitive book on the New York graffiti scene first published in 1984. At once hooked, Mr Cenz became fascinated with this exciting new art form and painted his fist wall at the tender age of 11 years old. "I've been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember, I was almost born with a pen in my hand." And as with most street artists worth their salt, Mr Cenz has had more than his fair share of brushes with the law - experiences that encouraged him to find walls he could paint legally and that didn't involve the threat of prison. Mr Cenz's work is an intricate fusion of old school graffiti lettering & Photorealist portraiture with a splash of Surrealism and sci-fi sensibility thrown in for good measure. His highly distinctive work involves layers of elaborately woven letters, shapes, figures and lines blurred to the edge of abstraction - female faces distorted in his trademark style are among Mr Cenz's most common subjects. Bursting with funk, soul, colour and energy, Mr Cenz's murals are instantly recognisable for their quality of finish, deftness of touch and skill at combining abstract and figurative elements so perfectly. And clearly his childhood obsession still burns as strong as it ever did: "Graffiti is all I think about, every minute of every day. I'll keep on pushing myself as an artist as long as I'm around, as long as my lungs keep going." Mr Cenz's work has been exhibited both in the UK and internationally and his murals can be spotted on the streets of London, Bristol, Birmingham, Denmark, Miami, Las Vegas & Tahiti.
