Jimmy C

James Cochran, aka Jimmy C, played a key role in the development of Australia’s underground graffiti movement during the early 1990s. After cutting his teeth on street murals and community arts projects, Jimmy studied at the University of South Australia where he completed a Masters in Visual Arts with a special focus on urban realist and figurative oil painting. It was here that his two greatest interests, graffiti and oil painting converged, giving birth to his unique drip dot style. 'Aerosol Pointillism' as it has become known, takes the dots a step further - "It was when I started making images using drips that I really felt I had something unique. It felt very natural, like a part of my personality. It just flowed.” Most of the figurative subjects Jimmy paints are based on real people and reflect both the strength and vulnerability of the human spirit. “I paint homeless people a lot. There is something really honest about them. It has something to do with the human struggle. They are in a bad position and I'm trying to capture their spirit of survival. They've got nothing to hide; what you see is what you get.” Following the tragic death of his mother when he was 12 years old, Jimmy left home and immersed himself in his art, spending a period of time living on the streets himself. “A lot of people ask me why most of my paintings show male subjects. And when I think about it, it's obvious - they’re all kind of self-portraits.” Jimmy's iconic drip dot paintings have been shown internationally and can be found on the streets of London, Paris, Berlin, Lisbon, Barcelona, Sao Paulo, Istanbul, Rome, Birmingham, Belgium, New York, Miami, Louisiana and Adelaide.
