Jason Botkin

Upon leaving Alberta College of Art and Design, Jason became disillusioned with what he perceived to be the “soulless, myopic, self-indulgent, elitist contemporary art world” – this frustration prompted a highly fertile journey of spiritual exploration that resulted in a series of significant life experiences including a semi-monastic period of Buddhist meditation, extensive travel, marriage, two years in Japan, kids and divorce. In 2003 Jason returned to his artistic roots with a fresh outlook and renewed desire to communicate his message to as wide an audience as possible. As Jason states, "Mural painting offered a unique opportunity to achieve this - confronted with a living, breathing, boundless tapestry across which I can spread ideas on every surface is a heavily inspiring experience which I truly love.” One of Jason’s many sources of inspiration is the work of the Mexican muralists who approached political and sociological themes with vibrancy and fearlessness. “Really good street art, or really good vandalism, contains a very strong anarchist message - one that kind of wakes us up. It shakes the cage a bit.” Jason's work has been exhibited widely and his murals can be spotted on streets throughout Canada, the US, Europe and the UK.

Jason is the also Co-founder & Director of EN MASSE, a project he describes as “a highly engaging series of multi-artist-experimental-large-scale-black-and-white-collaborative-drawing explorations.” EN MASSE is an on-going series of spontaneous creative projects that are designed to actively engage the talents of local street artists. Jason explains the strict black and white policy is “a key homogenising factor - there are such wild variables in the use colour that severely limiting the palette is the best way to make the collaborations with so many different artists work on this scale.” Jason is available for solo commissions and EN MASSE collaborations.
